but this and many subsequent appearances reinforced a standard of Tarn being a LARGE character.Ĭlick to expand.Overlord is not a "reasonable" height in any of his appearances. Granted, Alex Milne was not always the best at maintaining relative scale, and this could have been a communication error between writer and artist. Note that Tarn is BEHIND Black Shadow here. Even at the point that he had lost his arms and legs, it's clear that the differential between them was huge. In Tarn's very first appearance he was shown to absolutely DWARF Black Shadow, who was on the following page shown to be larger than Optimus or Impactor. Of course, by that point in the series, I'd lost a lot of faith in Roberts' instincts as a writer. I appreciate an author who can play with expectations, but these twists should always be satisfying rather than feeling cheap and capricious. The decision not to go with the Roller reveal feels like a colossal FU to the readers. It's almost like Roberts resented the fandom's interest in the character, and was trying to deflate him (and the DJD) both in power and stature. though perhaps of diminishing proportions.

Granted, everyone looks small next to Overlord, but Tarn definitely gave the impression of being very large throughout the series.
